'கல் தோன்றி மண் தோன்றாக் காலத்தே, வாளோடு
முன் தோன்றி மூத்த குடி!'

Tamil, an incredibly ancient yet the only language in the world which according to Harvard University fulfils all the eleven characteristics to be classified as Classical Language. The eleven prerequisites to be satisfied by a language for it to be considered a classical language are as follows

Although there are Archaeological evidences to show the existence of Tamil literary dating back to 5,000 year ago, it is such an ancient language that even determining the exact era of the language and its literature accurately is a strenuous task. Tamil is a very distinctive and unique language consisting of 247 characters in its alphabet, which is interestingly nearly 10 times greater than the letters in the English alphabet.

The earliest Tamil inscriptions known to mankind is dating back to 500 BC where primitive literary texts in Tamil were discovered. Some of the well-known literatures “Tholkaapiyam” (200BC) by Tholkaapiyar, a work on the grammar of the Tamil language and literature and “Thirukkural” (300BC) by Thiruvalluvar, a broad manual of ethics, polity and love. However, urbanisation, modernisation, immigration and giving priority to English is killing the language craze slowly and steadily. We ought to remember English is window of the world, but don't forget our mother tongue is main door to our world.

Moreover, Tamil language itself is strongly interlinked with our culture and our culture is expressed in language, literature, music, dance, theatre, folk arts, martial arts, painting, sculpture, architecture, sports, media, comedy, cuisine, costumes, celebrations, philosophy, religions, traditions, rituals, organizations, science, and technology. Hence, in order to preserve our culture and identity, we should love our language and endeavour teach this multidimensional language to our future generation too. This is the core reason why the *Liverpool Tamil School* has been established, not only to educate our beautiful language but also to inspire our future generations by making them understand the significance of our language. At Liverpool Tamil School, we use extensive array of methods and techniques to teach Tamil so that our children find it effortless and interesting to learn our quintessential language that we all love and venerate.

Our faith and admiration of Tamil language led us take the first footstep towards our objective to inaugurate Liverpool Tamil School on the 26th January 2014 and our drive and passion has never diminished. When we first started the Tamil school back in 2014, we had just 20 students and five years later our student numbers have increased significantly, and we have now over 200 fervent students studying Tamil and Fine Arts subjects.

Using our ancient three practices of Sangam literature, namely, Iiyal, Iisai, Naadagam, we are providing an impressive range of classes. Our main priority is to ensure our children learn to speak and write Tamil while learning extra-curricular activities such as performing art classes like Carnatic music and Bharatanatyam lessons and we are hoping to introduce Miruthangam, Keyboard and Violin soon. We have been blessed with dedicated, hard-working, disciplined and inspirational teachers with a passion to educate our children to achieve to their maximum potential.

The Tamil school also conducts annual sport day events to our students to improve their physical ability, teamwork, amenability, togetherness, motivation, drive, grit and determination. As a collective team of dedicated members, we are fully committed to developing our students’ ability to speak Tamil fluently with complete confidence and write with ease.

Our school has over the years grown from strength to strength and reached new heights of academic excellence. We are now at a place where can welcome new students with open arms. Our friendly committee members, fervent teachers and hospitable students are here to ready to welcome new group of students our ever-growing Tamil school.
